RAD Vocational Ballet Programme

The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Vocational Graded syllabus is a specialised and intensive training programme for students aged  P6 and above who are considering a future in dance, either professionally or as a teacher.

Unlike the RAD Graded syllabus (Grades 1–8), which offers a broader and more recreational approach, the Vocational pathway focuses on developing a high level of technical skill, artistry, and pointe work.

Levels of Study

Before entering the Vocational Graded syllabus, we offer Vocational Preparation classes designed to support younger dancers who are working towards this pathway.

Vocational Preparation (Primary 6 and above)
These classes help prepare students for the transition into vocational training by developing strength, technique, and discipline.

Students intending to join Vocational Preparation classes must:

  • Attend at least two graded ballet classes per week
  • Have previously sat an RAD ballet exam

The Vocational syllabus is then studied in sequence, with recommended training hours at each level:

Intermediate Foundation (Age 11+)
Introduction to pointe work and development of core technique
150 guided learning hours + 125 additional learning hours

Intermediate (Age 12+)
150 guided learning hours + 125 additional learning hours

Advanced Foundation (Age 13+)
150 guided learning hours + 125 additional learning hours

Advanced 1 (Age 14+)
150 guided learning hours + 175 additional learning hours

Advanced 2 (Age 15+)
150 guided learning hours + 225 additional learning hours

Solo Seal (Age 15+)

The highest level, focused on performance. Entry requires a Distinction at Advanced 2.

Guided learning hours include vocational and pointe classes. Additional learning may include graded ballet classes, ballet strength and conditioning, technique classes, private lessons, ballet workshops, and associate programmes.

Training Expectations

Students following the vocational pathway are expected to:

  • Attend at least two graded ballet classes per week alongside their vocational class
  • Take part in a weekly pointe class, appropriate to their level
  • Demonstrate a high level of discipline and consistency in training
  • Practice regularly at home to support their development
  • Make sure they are achieving the learning hours by taking additional classes.

This structure helps build the strength, stamina, and technical ability required at this level.

Assessment

All vocational exams are assessed by external RAD examiners, ensuring a high and consistent standard across all candidates.
