Code of Conduct


1. Purpose

1.1 The purpose of this Code of Conduct is to ensure a safe, respectful, and positive environment for all students, staff, volunteers, and visitors at Dunbar School of Dance (DSD).

1.2 All staff, volunteers, and children must adhere to this code to promote welfare, prevent harm, and uphold the school’s safeguarding standards.


2. Scope

2.1 This Code of Conduct applies to:

  • All paid staff;
  • Volunteers, including parent helpers;
  • Chaperones;
  • Students of all ages attending DSD classes, workshops, performances, and events.

2.2 The Code applies at all times during DSD activities, whether on-site at the DSD studio, at Hallhill Sports Centre, off-site events, or during online lessons.


3. General Principles

3.1 Everyone at DSD must:

  • Treat each other with respect and dignity;
  • Promote a safe, inclusive, and positive environment;
  • Avoid behaviour that could harm or offend others;
  • Act as a role model for behaviour, attitude, and ethics.


4. Conduct for Staff and Volunteers

Staff and volunteers are expected to:

4.1 Professional Behaviour

  • Be punctual and prepared for classes, workshops, and performances;
  • Dress appropriately and maintain professional appearance;
  • Maintain a positive and encouraging approach to teaching and mentoring;
  • Use constructive feedback to support development without belittling or embarrassing students.

4.2 Interaction with Students

  • Treat all children equally, regardless of age, gender, ability, race, religion, or background;
  • Maintain appropriate physical boundaries, touch only when necessary and always with consent, in line with the Safe Touch Policy;
  • Supervise students responsibly at all times, including transitions between classes.

4.3 Communication and Language

  • Use respectful, age-appropriate language;
  • Avoid swearing, offensive remarks, or inappropriate jokes;
  • Never use threats, humiliation, or coercion as discipline.

4.4 Use of Social Media and Photography

  • Only use images of students with parental consent;
  • Never post images with identifying details without consent;
  • Maintain professional boundaries on personal social media.

4.5 Reporting Concerns

  • Report any concerns about a child’s welfare immediately to the owner of the school.
  • Report any suspicions of inappropriate behaviour by colleagues or volunteers;
  • Follow all procedures for managing disclosures, complaints, and safeguarding incidents.

4.6 Confidentiality

  • Treat all personal information, including disclosure information, as confidential;
  • Only share information with authorised personnel on a strict need-to-know basis.


5. Conduct for Children and Students

5.1 Students are expected to:

  • Treat peers, staff, and volunteers with respect and kindness;
  • Follow teacher instructions and safety rules;
  • Attend classes punctually and participate actively;
  • Maintain appropriate behaviour in class, workshops, and performances;
  • Avoid bullying, teasing, or aggressive behaviour;
  • Respect school property, equipment, and other students’ belongings;
  • Speak to a staff member if they feel unsafe, bullied, or uncomfortable.

5.2 Students should understand that:

  • Physical contact in class is only permitted when necessary and supervised;
  • Punctual collection and supervision outside class is the responsibility of parents/guardians;
  • Online classes must be attended responsibly, dressed appropriately, and in the presence of a parent/guardian.


6. Parent/Guardian Responsibilities

Parents and guardians play a key role in upholding the Code of Conduct:

6.1 Ensure children arrive on time and are collected promptly by an authorised adult;

6.2 Support DSD staff in promoting positive behaviour and respect;

6.3 Communicate concerns or questions to staff professionally and respectfully;

6.4 Ensure children adhere to online safety guidelines during virtual classes.


7. Breaches of the Code of Conduct

7.1 Any breaches of this Code by staff, volunteers, or students will be taken seriously and investigated in line with DSD’s Safeguarding & Child Protection Policy.

7.2 Possible consequences for staff or volunteers include:

  • Verbal or written warning;
  • Additional training or supervision;
  • Suspension or dismissal;
  • Reporting to statutory authorities if appropriate.

7.3 Possible consequences for students include:

  • Verbal reminder and guidance;
  • Temporary removal from class;
  • Suspension from classes or activities;
  • In serious cases, permanent removal from DSD.


8. Acknowledgment

By participating in Dunbar School of Dance activities, staff, volunteers, students, and parents/guardians agree to:

  • Follow this Code of Conduct at all times;
  • Support a safe, respectful, and positive environment;
  • Understand that breaches may result in disciplinary action or removal from DSD activities.
