The Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) Graded ballet syllabus is a structured and internationally recognised programme designed to develop technique, musicality, and artistry in students of all ages.
The curriculum is progressive, guiding dancers from imaginative early learning through to advanced, technically demanding work. It provides a well-rounded dance education suitable for both recreational dancers and those wishing to progress further.
The graded syllabus is built on three key components:
Classical Ballet
The foundation of the syllabus, focusing on posture, alignment, technique, and turnout.
Free Movement
Expressive and creative movement influenced by contemporary, modern, and classical Greek dance styles.
Character Dance
Theatrical interpretations of national dances, including Hungarian, Russian, and Polish styles, adapted for performance.
The RAD Graded syllabus follows a clear progression:
Pre-Primary & Primary (Ages 5–7)
Introduces basic ballet technique, coordination, and musicality through fun and imaginative exercises.
Grades 1–3
Develops core ballet positions, technique, posture, and musical awareness.
Grades 4–5
Introduces more complex steps, including pirouettes and allegro (jumps), alongside increased artistry.
Grades 6–8
Focuses on advanced technique, refined musicality, and performance quality.
For students wishing to progress further, the Vocational Graded syllabus (Intermediate Foundation to Solo Seal) offers a more intensive, pre-professional pathway you can find information on this on the vocational ballet page.
We offer both RAD Exams and Class Awards, depending on each student’s readiness and confidence.
